I started with choosing something to run the emulators. I went with an old laptop I had with a broken screen. I disconnected the battery, and screen from the bottom half and installed Batocera Linux. I used FTP to transfer games and config files. I used a computer monitor which I stripped down. I did have to purchase a converter to go from HDMI to VGA.
I initially used scrap wood to hold everything in place but later, 3D modelled some supports for the screen, laptop, and speakers. This allowed for a more secure installation, especially when needing to move around. Has been a lot of fun and the kids love it!
This project was fun simply because I was able to use mostly "Junk" components, such as an old laptop, speakers, screen, cables (data/video), and external drive. Putting everything together and having the ability to add new features and expand its capabilities.
I want to finish adding the side buttons for pinball games, HDMI and USB ports to the front or sides to connect to TV and having more than one player. Currently I connect 2 PS4 controllers over Bluetooth.
